Just made it for this month’s blog 😁
September tomorrow, autumn, no! I’ve been loving this summer, I’ve always said that I should have been born somewhere with a warmer climate. I really won’t miss watering the gardens though, it was bad enough when we could use a hose but using cans and buckets was far worse. I’ve decided that someone needs to invent lighter water πŸ˜‚ It wouldn’t take half as long if the watering cans and buckets weren’t so damn heavy. I don’t know when the hosepipe ban will be lifted but I can’t even use my cat repeller, to protect my wildlife garden as it needs attaching to the hose. My night time wildlife camera shows just how many cats visit our garden (way too many). I really like cats but they kill so much wildlife. A squirt of water won’t do them any harm but it does deter them.

As you can tell, I did almost forget this August post and I had a peek at the stats this morning to see if I could get away with skipping the blog until September. However, I’m very pleased to say that I am still far exceeding my minimum number of readers. I’ve said it before, when you don’t read it, I won’t write it but for now lots of my lovely ex-customers tell me how much they enjoy reading my monthly blog. Funnily enough, I have just taken a call asking if I am still selling bugs, so I’m clearly not forgotten yet 😊 My Facebook page is going strong but I’ve been pretty poor at keeping it up. We visited the Stratford butterfly farm last weekend. It was a lovely visit, I went with my son, daughter and grandchildren but I forgot to take any photos from behind and as I said in my last blog, I am no longer posting photos of my gorgeous little ones.

I’m always saying that I should read my previous post before starting the next but I never remember until I have started the next. I have just read the July blog so following on - The saga of my tooth, I won’t bore you too much but I had to pay another £400 to get the rest of my tooth removed. It was torture and I wasn’t prepared for the agony I was left in afterwards! The dissolvable stitches didn’t dissolve, so two weeks later (still in constant pain) I had to go back to the dentist, pay another £127 to get the stiches removed. I must say that it was then almost instant relief, if I had known, I would have taken them out myself a week before. I kept threatening to remove the stitches but we were away in Hull one week and then Dorset the second. Hull was to visit my elderly half-brother and family but we did indeed get to visit Tim Baxter and he very kindly gave me a guided tour of his facility and also gave me a new baby scorpion and a scorpion that he had set in a frame. What a lovely chap, so knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. Dorset was a lovely treat, organised by our daughter in-law. We stayed in a beautiful Airbnb, country house. We went to Monkey World (to see my adopted Orangutan daughter, Oshine), we had beautiful weather, in one of my favourite places and then the next day we went to the Tank Museum 🀨 I tried so hard to get out of it and spend a day alone at Monkey World but my adorable grandson Bob was having none of it and made me go. War, fighting, guns and misery is really not my thing and then they said that our tickets were an annual pass, I couldn’t help laughing! (no chance).

It really is so different not having the bugs, I couldn’t go anywhere without so much work involved, both before and after any trip. Now I’ve been everywhere this summer (hence not having time for my blog). We are yet to have the holiday camp break with our daughter and family and week in Cyprus (just my husband and I). I also went to a school reunion yesterday, it was a very enjoyable afternoon, I do love a bit of reminiscing πŸ˜„ We were pretty lucky with the weather. This afternoon we are going to a local fete, I think we may well need umbrellas but we are British so we are going πŸ˜‚

Speeding up as it’s nearly lunch time – I have had my new car for three weeks now and it’s fantastic, it has so many features that my last new car didn’t have, I love it! I had never had a new car before and then this year I’ve had two.

A few days ago, I posted on Facebook about my leech experiment ending. I still think it had merit but I didn’t have the time and even for me, it was pretty yucky. I love to breed bugs and my leeches have laid eggs so that’s a win but I think I will be taking them along to the AES exhibition at the end of September and finding them a new home. I have to conclude that they are pretty savage little creatures but cute in their own way.

Retirement

Who am I? My bug room is cold, my bug room is quiet. I have lost my identity, they say we are defined by our job. Am I still “the bug lady”? I think so, I hope so, it’s all very weird and as someone who has always hated ‘change’, it’s difficult. I’m really glad I kept a tank of Hissing cockroaches, I always said that I would and I find it strangely grounding. The tank is now full of hissing cockroaches and anything else that I have found while emptying the room (odd cockroaches, cave crickets, a banded cricket   πŸ˜‚ ). One thing I love about this blog is that I can now use emojis, my old blog didn’t support them and I love emojis! I hear that I’m not supposed to use certain ones and that some may mean, “not what I intended” but ignorance is bliss so I won’t know unless you tell me   😊 I feel almost as busy as ever but with a lot less stress. The world has become busier and busier, people expect more and more and I needed to get off that crazy roundabout. I’m such a people plea...

A surreal week indeed!

A surreal week indeed! I sent off my last orders on Monday and the remainder of my bugs will be leaving me on Friday. So many people are congratulating me on my retirement but I prefer the good luck messages. I didn’t think I would ever retire but it all became too much, not just for me but my family too. Our home was taken over by my work. The bug room was my domain but the rest of the house had gradually filled up with ‘stuff’, plastic boxes, cardboard boxes, tanks etc. and I never ever had any time. Whatever task I was doing, I was always thinking of the next job on the list. People keep asking what I am going to do with my time now. In the short term I will be clearing everything out, especially the loft which is full to the brim. I’m a bit of a hoarder so that really doesn’t help πŸ˜„ Lack of time was indeed the main factor for finishing my business but there was also the constant “I only want a female tarantula” 😀, leaving Europe was a big blow, Covid, the animal welfare licensin...

My biggest announcement ever!

My biggest announcement ever! It is with a heavy heart that I am informing everyone of my impending retirement as “The Bug Lady”. I have been running my business for approximately 45 years so it has been pretty good J Things change over the years, I was one of the only bug dealers in the early days and possibly the only woman but these days, every man and his dog is selling tarantulas and “proper bugs” seem to have fallen out of favour. I have been cutting down on stock for some time and had hoped to keep going without the tarantulas but it hasn’t worked out. I expect to fully retire by the end of this year but a lot depends on my wonderful customers (you!) as I need to sell off a large number of little creatures. I still have 24 species of tarantula (multiple numbers of most), millipedes, cockroaches, isopods, scorpions, slugs etc. Do take a look on my website, once they are gone, they are gone! If you want to help me, please spread the word to all your bug mad friends. I have lots of...
