Long, hot, summer and I love it!

Long, hot, summer and I love it! We do need some rain for the garden, I don’t think we have ever gone so long without any rain in my life. Sadly, we have a hosepipe ban here but I think Thames Water tried hard to avoid it and it only came into force a couple of days ago. I am now lugging watering cans around (who needs the gym). We have a WhatsApp group for our road, I don’t use it very often but yesterday I did ask all my neighbours to put out a bowl of water for the local wildlife. I’m still loving my wildlife camera, I download the photos each day (yes, my husband did teach me how to do it). We have plenty of hedgehogs, which are my main focus but also, I love our regular early morning birds, especially the beautiful woodpeckers. I will tell you what I haven’t seen in weeks – SLUGS – yippee!

This week has been up and down for me. The down is that I had to have a tooth removed and it was a nightmare, the dentist couldn’t finish the job after an hour and I have to go to a specialist next week to get the rest of the tooth taken out. I’m now on antibiotics and painkillers. I have already spent £190 on a root canal specialist, only to be told that the tooth couldn’t be saved. I am not looking forward to next Friday! I am however greatly looking forward to next Monday, after months of anguish over my broken down and unrepairable Fiat 600, I’m picking up a brand new model πŸ₯³ I’m so pleased with the dealership, I have chosen the sports version of the Fiat 600 in “acid green”, it is absolutely beautiful and although more expensive, I got it at a discounted price. It’s been so stressful and my poor husband had to give up his car to me and use his motorbike for weeks (at least it was dry).

Retirement is not how I had pictured it but I never feel lonely or unloved, I continue to look after everyone, I’m sure that’s what I was put on this earth for πŸ˜‚ I’m really pleased that my mother in-law is doing so well. After breaking her hip in January and spending months in hospital, she is now back in her flat and thriving (as much as a 90 year old can). Her P.A. and I have a great relationship, I tell him what to do and does it or organises someone else to do it. I spend a fair bit of time at the local day centre, both my mother in-law and sister attend and Milo loves it as they have a sand pit, fish pond and cakes. He even has a goldfish named after him now πŸ˜„

I really like the heat but it would have been very different if I were still doing the bugs. How on earth would I have kept the bug room cool enough? And being such a worrier, I couldn’t possibly have posted my precious bugs in this heat. I did notice on Facebook that others have not posted orders because of the current weather. I do like the freedom of not having the bugs to worry about, I don’t even care when there is a power cut now but they use to drive me mad. I have said before but honestly, I have never lived anywhere with so many power cuts. Another perk of not having a zillion little creatures to worry about is that I can finally go away for a few days without all the meticulous planning. Nobody in my ‘normal’ life had a clue how to look after my bugs. My kids were always great but I had to feed and clean everything before I went and leave copious notes, the bug room was peppered with neon yellow post-it notes 😁 In the next few weeks we are going up to Hull to visit my half brother for a long weekend (I’m hoping to also meet up with Tim Baxter, the great scorpion man!), we are spending a long weekend in Dorset with our son and family and then 4 days at a holiday camp with our daughter and family. Plus, we are having another cheeky week in Cyprus in September (yes, we had a week in April but the weather was awful and I didn’t see a single snake 😀).

Must speed up, it’s lunch time and I need to sort something out that I can eat with my horribly swollen mouth. Sadly, I have realised that I need to be more careful about posting pictures of my gorgeous grandkids on social media. It’s a shame but there are a lot of weird people in the world and my daughter worries about it. Yes, I know I’m weird but I’m safe weird! Anyway, Milo and I have tickets to go to a local animal show for toddlers in a couple of weeks time, I’m really looking forward to it and I will just have to take some photos from behind to put on the Facebook page.

Happy summer everyone and here is a picture of my new car πŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’š

Retirement

Who am I? My bug room is cold, my bug room is quiet. I have lost my identity, they say we are defined by our job. Am I still “the bug lady”? I think so, I hope so, it’s all very weird and as someone who has always hated ‘change’, it’s difficult. I’m really glad I kept a tank of Hissing cockroaches, I always said that I would and I find it strangely grounding. The tank is now full of hissing cockroaches and anything else that I have found while emptying the room (odd cockroaches, cave crickets, a banded cricket   πŸ˜‚ ). One thing I love about this blog is that I can now use emojis, my old blog didn’t support them and I love emojis! I hear that I’m not supposed to use certain ones and that some may mean, “not what I intended” but ignorance is bliss so I won’t know unless you tell me   😊 I feel almost as busy as ever but with a lot less stress. The world has become busier and busier, people expect more and more and I needed to get off that crazy roundabout. I’m such a people plea...

A surreal week indeed!

A surreal week indeed! I sent off my last orders on Monday and the remainder of my bugs will be leaving me on Friday. So many people are congratulating me on my retirement but I prefer the good luck messages. I didn’t think I would ever retire but it all became too much, not just for me but my family too. Our home was taken over by my work. The bug room was my domain but the rest of the house had gradually filled up with ‘stuff’, plastic boxes, cardboard boxes, tanks etc. and I never ever had any time. Whatever task I was doing, I was always thinking of the next job on the list. People keep asking what I am going to do with my time now. In the short term I will be clearing everything out, especially the loft which is full to the brim. I’m a bit of a hoarder so that really doesn’t help πŸ˜„ Lack of time was indeed the main factor for finishing my business but there was also the constant “I only want a female tarantula” 😀, leaving Europe was a big blow, Covid, the animal welfare licensin...

My biggest announcement ever!

My biggest announcement ever! It is with a heavy heart that I am informing everyone of my impending retirement as “The Bug Lady”. I have been running my business for approximately 45 years so it has been pretty good J Things change over the years, I was one of the only bug dealers in the early days and possibly the only woman but these days, every man and his dog is selling tarantulas and “proper bugs” seem to have fallen out of favour. I have been cutting down on stock for some time and had hoped to keep going without the tarantulas but it hasn’t worked out. I expect to fully retire by the end of this year but a lot depends on my wonderful customers (you!) as I need to sell off a large number of little creatures. I still have 24 species of tarantula (multiple numbers of most), millipedes, cockroaches, isopods, scorpions, slugs etc. Do take a look on my website, once they are gone, they are gone! If you want to help me, please spread the word to all your bug mad friends. I have lots of...
