Still busy but things are gradually getting sorted out. June is a lovely month, lots of places to go and things to see. Last weekend was great, we went to a concert at the Chelsea Pensioners home in London to see Sparks (re-living my youth). I loved Sparks in the early 1970’s, I didn’t realise that they were still going and have produced 28 albums. Thankfully the weather was good, I had no idea it was an outdoor event! The group consists of two American brothers and considering that they are now 77 and 80, they were amazing! We went to Waterperry Gardens in Oxfordshire the next day, they were hosting a large craft event. The crafts, gardens and weather were super and we met lots of interesting people The cream teas were delicious and we spent too much money. We left early as we had to get back for a ‘duck race’ on the Thames (small plastic ducks, not real ones). It is an annual event at Maidenhead but we haven’t been before, we went along with our kids and their families. The afternoon was really nice, lots of stalls, lots of excited kids and lots of treats for all. We didn’t win the duck race but there is always next year.
My update as promised on the leeches project (as I call it). Well, it was hilarious, my poor husband had to get involved in the end as it was quite difficult to manage. Leeches are active creatures so getting one into a syringe (with the top cut off) was no mean feat. We then needed to position it directly onto the scar. It would take a long time to tell you everything, it was a long process but basically, we managed it and I think it may have softened the scar a little, time will tell. I couldn’t stop laughing at how ridiculous it was, even for me. My husband was moaning non-stop. The bite was really painful initially, I think it was munching on the scar (I know it was gross 😄) but then it settled. I had researched this but what should have been 30-45 minutes turned into an hour and a half! Eventually it fell off (with me jiggling it a bit). The biggest issue was that the site bled profusely and didn’t stop. I put a large plaster on but a little later realised that my clothes were soaked in blood. My husband was going nuts and I was googling “do leech bites ever need stitches”. He said if anyone saw it, I should say that he stabbed me because it would be less embarrassing than explaining the reality. Anyway, I survived and repeated the procedure with the other leech the next weekend. It wasn’t so painful, it was still attached for an hour and a half but I was far better prepared for the bleeding and had thick wads of gauze to cover the area. I think the poor little things were starving. I think feeding them every couple of months would be best, it is worth a try. I don’t want an operation to sort out my scarring, I am far more frightened of hospitals than leeches.
News of one slippery creature to another. If you have seen my Facebook page you will know that I am at war with giant slugs in my garden. I love my garden and it still looks jungle like but everything new that I plant is then eaten during the night. I cannot use slug pellets as we have hedgehogs frequently visiting. I am collecting up the slugs every day but there are hundreds. Almost everything that I have grown in my greenhouse has been eaten when I plant them out! It is beyond a joke now. I was talking to a friend yesterday and she told me that she sprays her plants with a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water. I intend to give it a go this evening so fingers crossed. My husband thinks it will kill the plants but I think it is worth a try and it didn’t kill her plants. She said some were slightly singed but that sounds better than completely gobbled up! I will only spray a few initially, just in case.
Well, I had better speed up, my husband is off on his annual motorbike trip to Spain, tomorrow. We have lots to do today, firstly the saga of my brand new car goes on 😡 We now have the car back but it isn’t fixed, the electrical fault could kick in at any time (the dealership is waiting to hear back from Fiat in Italy!) so I am driving my husbands car and a warning light came on yesterday, saying that a tyre was low in pressure. He has just set off to get it fixed as I don’t want a second car dying on me while he’s away. He also needs to teach me how to download the photos from my, much loved wildlife camera. He generally does it every day and I need to be able to see if we have baby hedgehogs! It is great to see what goes on in my wildlife garden, there are lots of things that trigger it, often me walking up and down the garden and the neighbours cats but at night, hedgehogs and wood mice, early morning birds coming down for a drink and I saw a large dragon fly that had triggered it a few days ago!
Lastly, I so enjoy the emails that I still receive from past customers. Just this week I heard from a guy who used to visit me regularly with his Nan and buy his pet bugs. It is just so nice. 😊
It seems to be a good year for Stag beetles, I have found two in my garden and my daughter saw one on a walk the other evening. She sent me a lovely photo of course. How I love Stag beetles. 💜💜💜
