Spring is here at last

Spring is here at last, it’s been a very long and wet winter! We are about to go on our annual trip to Cyprus, the same family run, calm and out of the way place as usual. I hope it will be a good time to see snakes emerging from their hibernation. It is earlier than we would have liked but our daughter is expecting her second baby in May and I will be on Nanna duties with Milo and helping our daughter. Our six year old grandson Bob, asked why he wasn’t coming with us, I told him that I think he would be a bit bored. He too enjoys looking for snakes so he was happy when I told him that he can help with this year’s reptile survey when we get back. I love the annual survey but we didn’t see as many reptiles as usual last year and I’m really hoping everything is well this year, after such a soggy winter.

This will be our first holiday since I gave up my bugs, it is really weird that I don’t have to get everything sorted out before we go. I’m really pleased but it’s also incredibly strange. I don’t have to feed and clean a zillion little animals and I don’t have to write out a long list of instructions for my daughter to follow. It will be super to come home in the early hours and go to bed, rather than go straight into the bug room and start repeating the process all over again. I also won’t have to come home to all the emails and issues that I used to but it feels odd. I do however have a greenhouse full of plants and seedling that will need care and my wildlife garden. My hedgehogs will need feeding and my gardens may need watering. My daughter will still be getting a little list ☺️ I just hope that there are no problems with getting to Cyprus and also getting back again but if EasyJet are flying then we are going!

My bug room has now been transformed into the “green room”, almost everything is coloured green, lots of plants, my small bug collection and all my bits and pieces. It is my sanctuary and although I feel a little guilty, I had to give away the giant dolls house that we put in there. It was way too big, we have toys all over the house and I want this room to be mine and suit me (has only gone to Milo’s cousins so he can still play with it, they have more space). Honestly, I’m not yet feeling I have the extra time that everyone told me I would have. Both the plants and wildlife take time in the garden. My gorgeous grandsons take time (god I love them!). My mother in-law has been in hospital for eight long weeks and is now being assessed to hopefully go into an assessment home (the world has gone mad). There are other issues that I can’t really mention in my open blog but suffice to say life is busy and I need my week away πŸ˜… I loved it when my daughter told me this week that her and Milo were watching telly and the show mentioned Nanna naps. My daughter said that she would call an ambulance if she found me napping 🀣

Got to be quick now, I’m going up to London soon, my quarterly Competitions Day, yes, I am also still doing my competitions and dreaming of free holidays (not so easy to win these days but I have won plenty in the past) and I’m still learning Spanish but just this week I found out that I have actually finished my Duo Lingo course. Amazing as that might sound, I honestly can’t speak Spanish πŸ˜‚ We are still planning to visit the BTS Show in May but it depends when the baby arrives, it is due on the day of the show! If the baby hasn’t arrived by then, I’m sure Milo would love to come along. After all he does now have his own baby tarantula, that Nanna gave him for his birthday last month. Enjoy spring everyone!

I don't think I will be entering this right now!

Retirement

Who am I? My bug room is cold, my bug room is quiet. I have lost my identity, they say we are defined by our job. Am I still “the bug lady”? I think so, I hope so, it’s all very weird and as someone who has always hated ‘change’, it’s difficult. I’m really glad I kept a tank of Hissing cockroaches, I always said that I would and I find it strangely grounding. The tank is now full of hissing cockroaches and anything else that I have found while emptying the room (odd cockroaches, cave crickets, a banded cricket   πŸ˜‚ ). One thing I love about this blog is that I can now use emojis, my old blog didn’t support them and I love emojis! I hear that I’m not supposed to use certain ones and that some may mean, “not what I intended” but ignorance is bliss so I won’t know unless you tell me   😊 I feel almost as busy as ever but with a lot less stress. The world has become busier and busier, people expect more and more and I needed to get off that crazy roundabout. I’m such a people plea...

A surreal week indeed!

A surreal week indeed! I sent off my last orders on Monday and the remainder of my bugs will be leaving me on Friday. So many people are congratulating me on my retirement but I prefer the good luck messages. I didn’t think I would ever retire but it all became too much, not just for me but my family too. Our home was taken over by my work. The bug room was my domain but the rest of the house had gradually filled up with ‘stuff’, plastic boxes, cardboard boxes, tanks etc. and I never ever had any time. Whatever task I was doing, I was always thinking of the next job on the list. People keep asking what I am going to do with my time now. In the short term I will be clearing everything out, especially the loft which is full to the brim. I’m a bit of a hoarder so that really doesn’t help πŸ˜„ Lack of time was indeed the main factor for finishing my business but there was also the constant “I only want a female tarantula” 😀, leaving Europe was a big blow, Covid, the animal welfare licensin...

My biggest announcement ever!

My biggest announcement ever! It is with a heavy heart that I am informing everyone of my impending retirement as “The Bug Lady”. I have been running my business for approximately 45 years so it has been pretty good J Things change over the years, I was one of the only bug dealers in the early days and possibly the only woman but these days, every man and his dog is selling tarantulas and “proper bugs” seem to have fallen out of favour. I have been cutting down on stock for some time and had hoped to keep going without the tarantulas but it hasn’t worked out. I expect to fully retire by the end of this year but a lot depends on my wonderful customers (you!) as I need to sell off a large number of little creatures. I still have 24 species of tarantula (multiple numbers of most), millipedes, cockroaches, isopods, scorpions, slugs etc. Do take a look on my website, once they are gone, they are gone! If you want to help me, please spread the word to all your bug mad friends. I have lots of...
