Short blog this week

Short blog this week, the alternative was no blog! I am very busy with all the changes taking place at the moment. It is Friday 13th which doesn't bode well with the fact that when my hubby gets in from work today he will be moving everything over to my new Apple Mac computer and then I will be spending the weekend learning to use the new system (wish me luck). Last weekend we picked up my new car (new to me car), it is a Skoda Yeti, lovely but again very different from my old car and I am also busy arranging everything in preparation for my new business venture in the New Year "Ginny's Jungle parties". I have my first practice party set up for next weekend.

I am not giving up my online shop! I am just hoping to diversify a little. I want to concentrate on captive bred stock and buy in less wild caught specimens. Most of my animals are captive bred and it would be great if I could get to the stage where I am only selling captive bred animals and the more I can actually breed myself the better! I have had a really good year with my breeding successes, I have lots of stick insects, millipedes, scorpions, beetles and zillions of various cockroaches. I haven't had huge success with breeding my tarantulas mainly because I generally have males of one species and females of another, not very helpful when it comes to mating! Don't get me started on the 'I only want female tarantulas' trend, all I can say is "don't we all". I have a whole shelf of adult male tarantulas at the moment and I can't even sell them with 50% off, that is 50% off the special offer prices, some are as little as £4.00 each!(see pink information box for details of sale).

It has been a nice busy week for sales, I now need to clear up my bug room, it looks like a bomb has hit it. All the empty boxes and containers are strewn around the room. I will be cleaning and refilling them over the weekend. Although I am trying to cut down there always seems to be something to house in the empty containers. Christmas is fast approaching and I will be running lots of special offers beforehand and then restocking again in January. It is very difficult to say when my last posting day will be as a lot depends on the weather and how well the postal system is doing. I often cease sending out orders some time before Christmas so do take advantage of the special offers (some extra special prices will run for one or two days only), please order early to avoid disappointment. You are welcome to call in and collect any orders, just give me a call to arrange it. I won't be buying anything new this side of Christmas so some creatures will start to sell out, don't miss out on that 'special' spider that you wanted.

Anyway this was going to be a short blog! Talking of Christmas my cards have arrived and I'm really pleased with them this year. It wasn't easy to get the bugs to pose for their photo, as usual they were walking off everywhere and I was tearing my hair out but I got it done early and I am happy with the result. Did you see the photo that a lady called Deborah posted on Facebook? The picture was of her pet Chile Rose tarantula Terri that she bought from me 15 years ago and she is still going strong. I know some of you saw it but I'm wondering if I was supposed to 'share' it, I'm getting there but I still have a long way to go with Facebook. I thought it was super and really made my day. Lastly, I am loving this mild weather, sorry if it is freezing where you are but here in the South it is sunny and extremely warm for the time of year. Long may it last! Thankfully no more power cuts this week, I have managed to write my blog all in one go and on the right day!

A surreal week indeed!

A surreal week indeed! I sent off my last orders on Monday and the remainder of my bugs will be leaving me on Friday. So many people are congratulating me on my retirement but I prefer the good luck messages. I didn’t think I would ever retire but it all became too much, not just for me but my family too. Our home was taken over by my work. The bug room was my domain but the rest of the house had gradually filled up with ‘stuff’, plastic boxes, cardboard boxes, tanks etc. and I never ever had any time. Whatever task I was doing, I was always thinking of the next job on the list. People keep asking what I am going to do with my time now. In the short term I will be clearing everything out, especially the loft which is full to the brim. I’m a bit of a hoarder so that really doesn’t help 😄 Lack of time was indeed the main factor for finishing my business but there was also the constant “I only want a female tarantula” 😤, leaving Europe was a big blow, Covid, the animal welfare licensin...

My biggest announcement ever!

My biggest announcement ever! It is with a heavy heart that I am informing everyone of my impending retirement as “The Bug Lady”. I have been running my business for approximately 45 years so it has been pretty good J Things change over the years, I was one of the only bug dealers in the early days and possibly the only woman but these days, every man and his dog is selling tarantulas and “proper bugs” seem to have fallen out of favour. I have been cutting down on stock for some time and had hoped to keep going without the tarantulas but it hasn’t worked out. I expect to fully retire by the end of this year but a lot depends on my wonderful customers (you!) as I need to sell off a large number of little creatures. I still have 24 species of tarantula (multiple numbers of most), millipedes, cockroaches, isopods, scorpions, slugs etc. Do take a look on my website, once they are gone, they are gone! If you want to help me, please spread the word to all your bug mad friends. I have lots of...

Getting there!

Getting there! My plans for retirement are going pretty well, I cannot believe all the wonderful messages that I have received over the last few weeks, many of them have had me in tears. It is very emotional to give up my little friends after a lifetime of keeping them and my human friends too but the time is right so I will keep plodding on until everything has gone. I won’t be changing my phone number and I hope to keep my email address, therefore, those who want to, can stay in touch. I had planned for a big sale on September 1st but orders are still going strong so an all-out clearance sale doesn’t sound such a great idea. I have decided instead to reduce items individually but I do keep changing my mind J It is really difficult to retire over a period of time, I couldn’t make the decision and then stop, like most people are able to. I can’t set a date in the future because I simply don’t know when sales will dry up. The idea of an open day sadly became unworkable, I just don’t hav...
