Hectic half term holidays!

Hectic half term holidays! It's been a strange week, work is really busy at this time but with my nephew's three children here it has been hard to fit everything in. We went up to London on Tuesday, visiting the Natural History museum and Harrods (where I explained to the kids that I got my very first stick insects). I have so many things to fit in today that I think something will have to give. I cannot believe that I slept in this morning! I woke at 6am fully intending to get up and write the blog but I fell back to sleep and was woken at almost 8am by my hubby, oh panic. Perhaps I should do the blog in 'bullet points' (short sentences, like a CV, my daughter goes on about them as a way of writing reports. She had a short stint as a recruitment consultant).

Bugs are all going well. I have sold large numbers of cockroaches this week, they needed cutting down before the 'big move' into my new bug room. Hubby has had a few days off but he too has been roped in with the kids. He took the time off to decorate the room but hasn't got as far as he had hoped. We just had a call from our son and he does need help with his house move tomorrow. We hoped to get out of it, I have, as I'm at the X-Factor Wembley tour, enjoying a competition win. The bug room is really taking shape though, it won't be too long before we can start moving things in. It will have to be a slow process as I want to get it right. The room is so much smaller than the current bug house, my only real concern is that it truly won't all fit. I think my pets will certainly need to be elsewhere in the house. Hubby is not too keen on my snakes but I love them so they may well end up in the living room. My two large tanks of Crested geckoes are a problem. The geckoes are lovely but one tank is enough and sadly the two males will not get on (females are fine together). I have just about given up trying to re-home them, I have wasted lots of time with no realistic offers of a good home. I don't want to just palm them off, I want a 'good' home or I will keep them all.

I seem to have a crazy number of tarantulas but I am not intending to cut them down. Tarantulas are clearly what people want these days. They are long lived, don't take up much room, easy to keep and cheap to feed and in my opinion some are very cute indeed (I'm thinking furry Avicularia's here, rather than 'snarling' baboon spiders). Whatever the tarantula species they are all different and interesting. Most people who keep them seem to have a collection rather than one or two. I have a few egg sacs at the moment. Earlier this week I was reading about taking the egg sacs away to incubate them but I can't bear to. Generally tarantulas are great mums and will hold onto their egg sac for dear life if someone tries to take it from them. I much prefer to leave them alone, they know when the egg sac needs turning or moving from one area of the tank to a drier/damper area. I discovered only yesterday that one of my Vietnam Earth Tigers has an egg sac. She is wild caught, I've had her for ages, she was obviously mated before she came to me. The box that she is currently in is too small so I will re-house her this Sunday (I intend to catch up with everything on Sunday!).

Seriously run out of time now, kids are coming in 15 minutes, picking mother in-law up for weekly shop in 30 minutes. I give up, I promise to do better next week !!!

Last thing, I have some brilliant customers, loved this YouTube link this week: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zakEWak-iu8&list=UUhzJMJqR3q8AoLgyD1aZdEQ&index=1

A surreal week indeed!

A surreal week indeed! I sent off my last orders on Monday and the remainder of my bugs will be leaving me on Friday. So many people are congratulating me on my retirement but I prefer the good luck messages. I didn’t think I would ever retire but it all became too much, not just for me but my family too. Our home was taken over by my work. The bug room was my domain but the rest of the house had gradually filled up with ‘stuff’, plastic boxes, cardboard boxes, tanks etc. and I never ever had any time. Whatever task I was doing, I was always thinking of the next job on the list. People keep asking what I am going to do with my time now. In the short term I will be clearing everything out, especially the loft which is full to the brim. I’m a bit of a hoarder so that really doesn’t help 😄 Lack of time was indeed the main factor for finishing my business but there was also the constant “I only want a female tarantula” 😤, leaving Europe was a big blow, Covid, the animal welfare licensin...

My biggest announcement ever!

My biggest announcement ever! It is with a heavy heart that I am informing everyone of my impending retirement as “The Bug Lady”. I have been running my business for approximately 45 years so it has been pretty good J Things change over the years, I was one of the only bug dealers in the early days and possibly the only woman but these days, every man and his dog is selling tarantulas and “proper bugs” seem to have fallen out of favour. I have been cutting down on stock for some time and had hoped to keep going without the tarantulas but it hasn’t worked out. I expect to fully retire by the end of this year but a lot depends on my wonderful customers (you!) as I need to sell off a large number of little creatures. I still have 24 species of tarantula (multiple numbers of most), millipedes, cockroaches, isopods, scorpions, slugs etc. Do take a look on my website, once they are gone, they are gone! If you want to help me, please spread the word to all your bug mad friends. I have lots of...

Getting there!

Getting there! My plans for retirement are going pretty well, I cannot believe all the wonderful messages that I have received over the last few weeks, many of them have had me in tears. It is very emotional to give up my little friends after a lifetime of keeping them and my human friends too but the time is right so I will keep plodding on until everything has gone. I won’t be changing my phone number and I hope to keep my email address, therefore, those who want to, can stay in touch. I had planned for a big sale on September 1st but orders are still going strong so an all-out clearance sale doesn’t sound such a great idea. I have decided instead to reduce items individually but I do keep changing my mind J It is really difficult to retire over a period of time, I couldn’t make the decision and then stop, like most people are able to. I can’t set a date in the future because I simply don’t know when sales will dry up. The idea of an open day sadly became unworkable, I just don’t hav...
