An uneventful week, bug wise.

An uneventful week, bug wise. I've had a busy week personally and due to my cold and feeling very unwell for a few days I still have some catching up to do. I was working in the bug house until 9pm yesterday, I just thought right, I have got to get to grips with this week's feeding rota or the week will be over! I'm glad I put in the time because I do feel a bit calmer today. My hubby took a couple of days off to help but quite honestly there is little he can do to help with my work. Still he comes in very handy running his mum to hospital appointments, walking the loony dog and making endless cups of tea (which I live on).

We are off to a spider show on Sunday, it was very good last year so I am hoping it is as good this year. I wish it was a bit closer to where we live. I will be more careful than usual about what I buy, sales have picked up a little but are way down on this time last year. I have found that spider sales especially are down. I have bought in a great deal of new spiderlings this month, they are extremely labour intensive and selling so slowly that I have to be incredibly careful not to overdo it. I certainly don't want the animals to suffer because I have too many to feed (I've seen the cat hoarders on the Houston ASPCA - Animal Planet TV channel). I'm sure I will get some new spiders as it is a spider show but top of my 'shopping list' is millipedes. I am hoping to get some Train millipedes but there certainly don't seem to be many around and the price has shot up. I am of course famous for my endless lists and I do have a long written list for the show. I'm not sure how many dealers are going, I have asked a couple of people who I thought would attend but they said "not this year". I always enjoy the shows, it is good to chat to people and see what other people are keeping. I have some beautiful adult female tarantulas so it would be great to find males and hopefully breed them.

With all the new stock that I have this month my paperwork has been neglected, the pile seems to be increasing by the day. I just haven't had the time to properly catch up on it since Christmas. I am out and about today, Friday is the only day that I don't post orders (due to the lack of weekend postal deliveries), so I generally run errands on this day. However tomorrow I intend to concentrate on paperwork! I have only one person visiting my bug house tomorrow. Since deciding to open my doors on a Saturday I have had a few enquiries but it seems a lot of people work on a Saturday and children have activities planned eg. football and other weekly events. I am therefore thinking of having the odd open day during half term, Easter etc. (let me know what you think).

It is not like me, I am struggling to find anything to say, I must still be ill! I expect to have far more to say next week after the show and after clearing my desk (um). Hopefully I will be deluged with orders, many people have told me they get paid at the end of the month and will be placing an order with me then! I had a really yucky thing happen the other day. I went to feed my crested geckoes and saw that one of the adult females had lost her tail. The tail was just lying on the cage floor, I have no idea what happened. I know lizards can lose their tails but it has never happened to me. All I can think is that the status quo had been upset. I transferred my last remaining baby from my other tank into this one. I think the baby is female, she is quite large now. I doubt if she has been fighting, she looks perfect but I wonder if the male attacked the older female. The gecko without a tail came to me as an adult and has never been as tame as my others. She is the only one to bite so I wonder if the male was protecting the younger female. They all seem ok now but she looks very strange with no tail.

Another week over and one week nearer to Spring!

A surreal week indeed!

A surreal week indeed! I sent off my last orders on Monday and the remainder of my bugs will be leaving me on Friday. So many people are congratulating me on my retirement but I prefer the good luck messages. I didn’t think I would ever retire but it all became too much, not just for me but my family too. Our home was taken over by my work. The bug room was my domain but the rest of the house had gradually filled up with ‘stuff’, plastic boxes, cardboard boxes, tanks etc. and I never ever had any time. Whatever task I was doing, I was always thinking of the next job on the list. People keep asking what I am going to do with my time now. In the short term I will be clearing everything out, especially the loft which is full to the brim. I’m a bit of a hoarder so that really doesn’t help 😄 Lack of time was indeed the main factor for finishing my business but there was also the constant “I only want a female tarantula” 😤, leaving Europe was a big blow, Covid, the animal welfare licensin...

My biggest announcement ever!

My biggest announcement ever! It is with a heavy heart that I am informing everyone of my impending retirement as “The Bug Lady”. I have been running my business for approximately 45 years so it has been pretty good J Things change over the years, I was one of the only bug dealers in the early days and possibly the only woman but these days, every man and his dog is selling tarantulas and “proper bugs” seem to have fallen out of favour. I have been cutting down on stock for some time and had hoped to keep going without the tarantulas but it hasn’t worked out. I expect to fully retire by the end of this year but a lot depends on my wonderful customers (you!) as I need to sell off a large number of little creatures. I still have 24 species of tarantula (multiple numbers of most), millipedes, cockroaches, isopods, scorpions, slugs etc. Do take a look on my website, once they are gone, they are gone! If you want to help me, please spread the word to all your bug mad friends. I have lots of...

Getting there!

Getting there! My plans for retirement are going pretty well, I cannot believe all the wonderful messages that I have received over the last few weeks, many of them have had me in tears. It is very emotional to give up my little friends after a lifetime of keeping them and my human friends too but the time is right so I will keep plodding on until everything has gone. I won’t be changing my phone number and I hope to keep my email address, therefore, those who want to, can stay in touch. I had planned for a big sale on September 1st but orders are still going strong so an all-out clearance sale doesn’t sound such a great idea. I have decided instead to reduce items individually but I do keep changing my mind J It is really difficult to retire over a period of time, I couldn’t make the decision and then stop, like most people are able to. I can’t set a date in the future because I simply don’t know when sales will dry up. The idea of an open day sadly became unworkable, I just don’t hav...
