Common Name: Ornamental Baboon
Scientific Name: Heteroscodra maculata
Status: Captive bred
Country of origin - West Africa
Habitat: Tree dwelling
Suitability: Not for beginners, ultra aggressive
My Opinion:
Another fast, aggressive Baboon tarantula, probably one of the most common Baboon spiders kept in captivity. They are easy to keep, breed and rear, they are very pretty, being more of a light grey colour than the usual brown. Their name comes from the fact that they possess such ornate patterning on their bodies, they are sometimes also known as the Togo Starburst Baboon. I call them 'ultra' aggressive as I actually had a larger spiderling bite me on the wrist as I tried to stop it running across my table and then to add insult to injury it ran up my arm and bit me on the shoulder. I was surprised that it's fangs could penetrate my skin but they did and I felt it! (a bit like being jabbed with a pin and then later like a nettle rash)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is difficult to give a size for the spiders as stock is constantly changing. Generally, the small size is a spiderling up to 1cm body length (small will be SMALL), juvenile is a grown on spiderling with a body length of 1cm to 2cm, medium 2cm to 4cm and a large is 4cm to fully adult (but a lot depends on the species!)
I am happy to send a photo of any size tarantula spider that you are interested in, just email me!
All spiders are unsexed unless stated.
