Common Name: Orange Baboon Tarantula
Scientific Name: Pterinochilus murinus
Status: Captive bred
Country of origin - Mombasa (and surrounding African countries)
Habitat: Ground dwelling
Suitability: Not for beginners, very aggressive
My Opinion:
Another fast moving, aggressive Baboon tarantula, probably one of the oldest species of tarantula to be kept in captivity in this country. They have certainly been around since I started keeping spiders over 30 years ago but in those days they were all the regular brown colouration (known as the Golden Starburst Baboon) which is becoming rarer now as the Orange colouration has become more popular. They are very pretty spiders but always 'up for a fight'. They do seem to give plenty of warning as they rear up with fangs outstretched (a scary sight). This spider also builds a thick web. Sometimes called the OBT, some say it stands for Orange Baboon tarantula but most say it means "Orrible Bitey Thing"!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is difficult to give a size for the spiders as stock is constantly changing. Generally, the small size is a spiderling up to 1cm body length (small will be SMALL), juvenile is a grown on spiderling with a body length of 1cm to 2cm, medium 2cm to 4cm and a large is 4cm to fully adult (but a lot depends on the species!)
I am happy to send a photo of any size tarantula spider that you are interested in, just email me!
All spiders are unsexed unless stated.
