How I keep mine
These Giant Leaf insects are amazing, their beauty and camouflage is unbelievable. I haven't kept them for years but I do recall that they were not as easy to rear as the smaller leaf insects, however they are well worth the effort. I think the main points are heat and humidity, they need to be kept warm and humid without the air becoming stale. I am keeping mine in a glass tank with damp kitchen roll on the base. The nymphs are feeding on bramble, I did put a little evergreen oak in with them (I have lots growing in the garden) but they don't seem to have touched it. I think bramble alone is fine, I place it in a small jar of water and pack tissue around the stems to prevent the nymphs drowning. I have been told that these leaf insects do not require spraying with water. I am changing the tissue every two or three days to keep the tank clean and fresh. I am probably doing more than required as the guy who bred these told me that he had also sold some to a pet shop who have simply left them in a sweet jar with bramble and they seem to be thriving! I do think these Leaf insects come from good breeding stock, my supplier is very experienced and has had few problems rearing them in large numbers.
